Active experiences in Salzburg

This city surrounded by greenery offers endless sporting offers and activities for summer and winter. There is a wide range of offers to suit all holidaymakers here, close to the Salzburger Land region. See here for more information.

From Salzburg to the ski resort

Not only does the city offer the very best views of the mountains, the peaks are also very close by. With the free shuttle, you can be on the pistes of the Snow Space Flachau in just 1 hour with its 110 km of ideally prepared pistes. Other ski resorts nearby: St.Johann/Alpendorf, Radstadt, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Kleinarl, Eben, Filzmoose and Goldegg. And if this one small but refined ski resort is not enough, the Gaissau-Hintersee ski resort just 30 km away certainly has plenty to offer.

Cross-country and touring

The first opportunity to try cross-country can be found at the Hellbrunn Palace, right in the city itself. And just 10 minutes outside of the city, you can also glide gently across the snow on the Gaisberg – Oberwinkl. The region’s numerous ski resorts offer fun on the pistes as well as relaxed cross-country tours and imposing ski tours.

Sledging and ice-skating

A real sledging paradise can be found just 30 km from Salzburg. The towns of Lidaun, Faistenau and Tiefbrunnau have natural toboggan runs as well as offering bobsleigh trails and a snow-tubing facility. Those wishing to engage in some ice-skating need not even leave the city. The ice rinks in the Volksgarten and Mozartplatz, the ‘Bergxi’ ice rink and more provide ice-skating for both amateurs and professionals.

Cycling and biking

Salzburg is home to 180 km of cycle trails and many other cities could certainly learn something from its example! The city is easy to explore following a leisurely trail along the Salzach river, via the Hellbrunner Allee (closed to cars) and past the city’s numerous parks. Overall, visitors have access to 25 bike tours as well as bike repair centres and secure bike parking. The City Bike Guide Salzburg provides more information on the tours. And if the 180 km of cycle trails is not enough, there are also lots of long-distance trails through Salzburg with a wide range of mountain biking trails, perfect for letting off steam.

Running and Nordic walking

There is no shortage of offers for joggers and Nordic walkers in Salzburg either. Various running trails of 1 to 21 km in length provide plenty of variety even within the city itself. Special extra: the citizens’ service at the Mirabell Palace has a free pocket running map featuring the 9 most popular running trails.

Hiking in the Mozart city

Nestled within the city’s legendary mountains, this city of culture is quickly becoming a hikers’ paradise. Several hiking and walking trails on the Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg and Gaisberg provide an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and recharge your batteries in the fresh air.
Those who want to walk up even higher can explore the peaks of the nearby Salzburger Land with its gently rolling meadows, imposing mountains and idyllic mountain lodges.

Climbing and high ropes course

Climbing plays a big role in Salzburg, just like it does in any larger city in the mountains. Numerous bouldering routes, a climbing hall and outdoor spots offer climbing fun at lofty heights. Popular with all ages, the Anif Climbing Park offers a high ropes course, zipwire, team training and much more.

Numerous golf courses in Salzburger Land

With 21 golf courses in Salzburger Land, the city certainly does not need to hide away its offering. There are also 13 additional golf courses in Salzkammergut right outside the city for golfing fun between the mountains and lake.
